October 20th is The National Day on Writing sponsored by The National Council of Teachers of English. Everyone is encouraged to participate and submit a piece of writing: students, teachers, parents, grandparents, legislators, and more. NCTE has created The National Gallery of Writing as a part of this exciting event. There you can submit ONE piece to include in a gallery. The Oklahoma Writing Project has applied for a Local Gallery – a place just for us so we can be included in this national event.
For now, let’s start getting our writing out there! Submit anything you want to the comment section of this blog post. It can be a short story, poem, essay, personal narrative, character sketch, etc. The possibilities are endless. For our blog, we don’t have to limit it to one submission per person. Start writing so you can decide what you want to submit to our Local Gallery when it is approved.

This is time for celebration. I’m so excited about the kickoff of the new webpage. Now that everything is in one place, there is no excuse not to stay involved.
Our first endeavor, the ELL book study, didn’t turn out to be very successful, but we aren’t going to give up. So, to get everyone used to going to the BLOG, let’s have an entry where everyone introduces themselves. I’ll leave the first comment as an example.

Welcome to the OWP professional development blog. We will be focusing on the various National Writing Project initiatives. Our first initiative will be English Language Learners. The book we will be using is When English Language Learners Write by Katherine Davies Samway. All TCs and their colleagues are invited to participate.
OWP will purchase Samway’s book for every OWP TC interested in participating in this professional development. The book has 7 chapters. Each week a reflective question will be posted about the chapter for that week, and we foresee reading and discussion of this book lasting at least 7 weeks. Of course it could extend beyond that time, depending on everyone’s interest; or we may want to read and discuss additional books and articles on ELL.
Each week your responsibility as a participant will be to respond at least once to the reflection question about the chapter and once to one of your colleagues’ responses. That would mean posting a minimum of 14 responses across the reading of the entire book, and a posting of 2 responses each week.
Click on the ELL tab at the top of the page to read a little about the book and join in on the discussion.
